 Dear Mike:

Let me tell you a sad story and ask you a couple of questions.

This Christmas I bought Leila Dennison a Microtek scanner. The reason I bought a Microtek is that I have one and it works well with my Packard Bell computer. Unfortunately it did not install as easily as mine did since Packard Bell has now filled all the IRQ slots.

I told her to take it to Best Buy and they would know how to make an IRQ share. I know this can be done, I do not know how to do it but was sure that your people could since they are advertised in print, TV and on the WWW as, "Experts."

She first took her Computer and scanner in on 1/20/97, paid the $39.99 and was told it would take a few days. Leila picked her equipment up on 1/24/98. Noted on the work order, "SCSI card installed conflicts with sound and/or tv/video card."

I told her that it did not take an, "expert" to install the scanner that way. I was willing to do it for free if she was willing to give up her TV or sound. I told her to take it back and have them do it right.

Leila loaded the scanner and computer in her car and took it back to Best Buy on 1/27/98. She told the Tec to make it share IRQ's and restore her sound and TV card. She waited until very late in the afternoon and since she needed the computer for work, picked it up.

On 1/30/98 Leila once again loaded every thing up and took it back to Best Buy where she was assured that they knew how to do make everything right.

Leila picked up her equipment on 2/l/98 after being told that her TV and sound cards were restored and everything worked fme EXCEPT the scanner, which was defective. When we got the equipment back to my house I plugged the scanner into my computer and it worked fme. I have begun to doubt the competence of your computer Tec since they did not repackage the SCSI card in it's provided anti-static bag.

Leila and I hooked her computer to my monitor. It refused to boot in any thing except the, "SAFE MODE." An error message came up that said, "An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted. Change the STACK setting in your config.sys file." The STACK setting is where you change things to enable IRQ'S.

Leila was assured when she left the store this last time that everything was in working order. It was not. She was assured that her scanner was defective. It was not. Leila was assured by print and TV media that she could trust the experts at Best Buy. She could not.

My question to you is this. Do you read the Michigan criminal statutes the same way that I do with respect to fraud? Does it constitute fraud when you take money to do a job of work and when you do not or cannot and you cover up the facts with lies. How much of the SEVEN BILLION dollars that Best Buy took in last year was rung into the cash drawer under these same circumstances?

 Sincerely,

 Tim O'Malley
